FAREWELL TO A WONDERFUL LADY

"Aunt Margaret" has always been in my life.  Her husband, Bill, was my Grandma Howard's cousin.  His mom, Leila Bigler, and Grandma's father, Abner Tranter Bigler, were brother and sister.  One of my few neighbors growing up.  She was in my ward for years, and was the secretary at American Fork High School when I was a student.

Margaret Priday Sykes

Margaret Priday Sykes
1925 ~ 2014
Margaret Priday Sykes, 89, passed away at her home in American Fork, Utah September 25, 2014. She was born May 27, 1925 in American Fork, to Thomas Samuel and Josephine Forbes Priday. She had one brother, Leland Forbes Priday and one sister, Chole Priday (Weed). She married William Bigler Sykes in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 1, 1948.
Margaret was a wonderful mother to Mary Anita Sykes (Barry), Glen Priday Sykes (Carol), Patricia Sykes Tolton (Richard), Mark Priday Sykes (Bonnie), Marilyn Sykes Johnson (Kevin) and Joanne Sykes (Patrick). She adored seventeen grandchildren and thirty four great-grandchildren. Margaret graduated from American Fork High School and Brigham Young University. She worked as a secretary at American Fork High School. Margaret and Bill served a mission to Nauvoo. She was an active member of the LDS church serving in many positions.
Margaret enjoyed DUP, her literary club, class reunions, and was a master planner of family parties. She had a smile for everyone and had a gift of making others feel like they were her favorite. She was a delightful person with a fun sense of humor, was dedicated to any task, and a good friend to all. Margaret will be greatly missed by many.
She was preceded in death by a daughter (Anita), her husband, her siblings and parents.

A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Warning:  This is a looong post!  But, I'm feeling a little nostalgic
about the place I taught for 1/3 of a century!

Alpine Elementary is 50 years old
at its current location.
(and that's only west doors to double doors)
Don's room was the stage, and the lunchroom was south
of Don's room...where Cheryl's last room was.

Next, the "pickle barrels" were added.
I never saw them, but Calvan and Roger talked about them alot.
They were round, and far east of the original school.  Several classrooms
were held in these while the new addition was being built.

The new addition was from the double doors...the media center,
and the two halls north and south of the media center.
This was finished by the 1972-73 school year.
I knew this, because I was in 9th grade.  We went with the
American Fork Junior High Band to do a concert.
All of the big library tables that were there (Paula got rid of the
big, cumbersome tables), they were pushed together to make a stage,
and there were chairs set on top.  We climbed up and  performed there.
The entire area, media center and classrooms, were open.

In 1976, the US Bicentennial (and the year I graduated from high school),
each school in the district had to create a lasting project.
At Alpine, it was a huge fireplace!  The hearth had tiles with
each child's name.  On the back, was a tile mosaic of the
Statue of Liberty and an eagle.

I started my teaching career in 1980.
My classroom was a plywood box, built in the back of the media center.
5th and 6th grade teachers were on north of media center.
Mr. McDaniel, Mr. Brown, Mr. Pool, Mr. Olsen, Mr. Vance.
4th grade teachers were south of me.
Mr. Bodell, Mr. Thompson, Mr. Dimond.
The 3rd grade was all together in a big area, west of fourth grade.
It was in my room and Washburn's.
This was Mrs. Searle, Mrs. Philipp, and Mrs. Park.

On the last day of school, all of the men took my plywood box down.
In my second year, my plywood box went up in a different location.
The Bicentennial mural was now a part of my room.

1983
We started the year with double sessions.
1st grade shared their rooms with 3rd grade.
2nd grade shared with kindergarten.
4th grade was squeezed into media center, at the back "wet area."
This lasted 2-3 weeks.
They were bringing in the first ever looooong portable classroom.
It was high tech (for 1983) and all wood paneled!!!
2nd, 3rd, 4th, and resource, were moved out there.
It was called "The Satellite."
It was placed on the parking lot east of the school.
This was decided for the following reasons:
1.  Too far for 1st graders, they might get lost.
2.  5th and 6th grades needed to be closest to the encyclopedias
in the media center.
(Thank goodness!!!)
I moved to my current location, where I stayed for 31 years.
This was decided because:
1.  Closer to bathroom for me.
2.  Paul Thompson wanted to stay in his corner.
6th grade north
5th grade south

1984
A new addition was added on to the lunchroom.
It was our "auditorium."
Well, carpeted floor and a stage.
We called them "old gym" (lunchroom) and "new gym" (auditorium).

Early 1990's
Permanent walls were made of the open classrooms.

1996
Office and principal's office remodeled.

 About 2005
New addition added that housed 2nd and 3rd grades ,
computer lab, and resource.
All of the 5th and 6th graders moved everyone in.
After you walk from my hall, to their hall, it turns. It's not straight.
The reason?  The man that owns the water rights underneath would
not sell.  So, they had to build around it!

The old satellite was going to be moved to Forbes Elementary
on the last day of school.
They were going to house the entire school in it on their
playground while the original structure was torn down and rebuilt.
This would be the 3rd Forbes school.
(The original Forbes, was where the current fire station in American Fork is today.
North of Harrington...that old building is still there.
When I went to Harrington in 1st and 2nd grades, the structure
was gone, and our playground was there.)
Well, that move was entertaining!!!
The building could come apart in 2 sections to transport it.
As they took it down the road west of school, where buses drop off,
the first half got STUCK!!!

After the satellite was gone, they built a new drive-thru drop off and
parking lot.
It was like coming home!
I, however, suggested a full parking lot!  There was never enough
room when there would be programs, SEPs, carnivals, dance festivals, etc.
Nope.  Didn't listen to me...half grass, half parking.

 2002
Old lunchroom and auditorium were torn down.
New classes, lunchroom, faculty room, and auditorium were added.

There have also been little various classrooms put right on
the playground.
(Not a fan...especially when my view was blocked.)

The first school in Alpine was founded in 1851.
That's only 4 years after Brigham Young said,
"This Is The Place!"
Not sure of any details.

Then, in 1899, a school was built on 200 North on the north side of the block.

This is the building that was used until 1964.
Calvan, Sandra, Bonna, and Loretta went here to school.
I always heard from them about sledding
down the hill at recess, crashing, then doing it again.

All grades were split.
(except kindergarten)
1st/2nd and 3rd/4th.
5th grade went to Harrington in American Fork.
6th grade was junior high.
The kids my age started school here.
The building to the right was the gym.

In 1964, the new Alpine Elementary opened for business!
The kids my age went to 1st-6th grade there.
I don't know when the building was torn down, but it was still standing
when I was in high school.
The "gym" was there for awhile after I started teaching.
They roller skated, had spook alleys, exercise classes, etc. in it.

So...here are the aniversary festivities.
Thanks to PTA president Melanie Ewing, Connie Gockeritz,
and others who helped pull this together!
Friday, September 26, 2014.
. . . and just like we had done for 18 years, 1980-1998,
Ann Searle and I carpooled!

 Banner on fence

This train has been a highlight for years!
Food trucks in the background.

Hannah and Audrey from my last class.
Cotton candy and face painting were part of the fun.
Audrey has a peacock.
She loves them!!!
These cuties are in 7th grade now.

THE MURDOCK GIRLS
Leanne Williams and Laura Smith.
Leanne was in my 1st class in 1980-1981.
Laura was in my 7th class . . . 1986-1987.
Their brother, Eric, was in my 4th class . . . 1983-1984.
I have kept  up with them through the years, because their dad, Joe Murdock, is my doctor!
Leanne is a stay-at-home mom.
Laura taught the special ed kindergarten for a couple of years at Mt. Mahogany.
Eric is the head counselor at Hillcrest High School in Sandy.
LOVE THE MURDOCKS!
Ann Searle taught them, also.

THE PAGE FAMILY
Brandon Page, the father, went to Alpine Elementary as a child.
Their son, Payton . . . one of my favorites!
I also taught the oldest Page boy, Jared.
He's currently serving a mission.

 THE PENNIES
Lesa McClure Pennie and Paul Pennie.
Lesa was in my 3rd class . . . 1982-1983.
Paul was a year or two ahead.
Two Alpine Elementary students who married each other!
Lesa's dad married my neighbor 2 or 3 years ago.
John Pool taught 6th grade until 2000 . . . so, 20 years with John.

 MEGAN
There was no one available to take our picture . . . so, a "selfie."
Megan is sooo adorable!  She was in my last class.
I taught her brother, Logan.
She's also in 7th grade.

Ashley Christiansen, David Stephenson, Condita Washburn
Gorgeous mountains in background!!!

Jack Brown, Brian & Karen Page, Ann Searle, Carl Mellor, Adonna Iverson,
John Pool, Cathy Tibbitts, Me, Nancy Pope

Bonna Hanson, Analee Wiser, Don Beckstrand, Adonna Iverson

TEAM  2009-2011
Condita Washburn, Matt Goff, BreAnn Wayman

Condita taught 8 or 9 years with me.  She moved into my room.
She coveted my drinking fountain and the ceiling mounted projector (LOL).
But, she didn't know about the heat in the room from August-September, and May...and the noise from the door when everyone comes through...and the drinking fountain outside the room.
I told her to cheer up!  You don't hear the toilet flush very much from
the boy's bathroom through the wall.
Well, because boys don't flush often!

Matt Goff taught 4 years with me.
He transferred to Fox Hollow in Lehi.
He teaches 6th grade.
In order to be a principal (finished his Masters this year), he needed a different
grade experience.

BreAnn taught 2 years with me, 1 year regular 1st grade, and 2 years of
1st grade Chinese Immersion.
She went to Blackridge Elementary with Cami.
BreAnn bought a home in Eagle Mountain 2 or 3 years ago, so
she's closer to home.
She now teaches 4th grade.

JED BECK
I taught Jed sometime in the early 90's.
I also taught his older brother, Taylor, and his younger sister, Maddie.
His dad was a senior in high school when I was a sophomore.
He actually had seizures in my class.
He said it continued for 2 or 3 more years, then stopped.
He was mad he couldn't play football for awhile!
He told me that 5th grade was his favorite grade, and I was his
favorite teacher!
Jed started ticking off all of these activities we did.
***Warm Fuzzies***
His aunt, Julie Beck, is the former
General Relief Society President.

PRINCIPALS
These folks know that they are expected to line up in the order that they were principal!
Last time it was done, David was the newbie.

CARL MELLOR:  1964-1978
Carl Mellor was principal at the old school, I don't know how long.
1st principal at current location!  At one time, he was principal AND taught the 4th grade!
He was the principal that all of my classmates had!!!
Carl was the UEA president sometime in the mid '60s.
After retirement, he ran a catering business.
Two months after this picture was taken, Carl passed away.
Soooo glad he was able to come to this celebation!

BRIAN PAGE:  1978-1983
Brian was the principal when I began my teaching career in 1980.
He was sooo high tech!  Knew about computers (got the school one on a rolling cart)
and was a fabulous singer!
He entertained a lot with Conrad.
He not only played the guitar and bass, but he actually built the bass, too!!!
Also, created a dark room in wet area by my classroom, and taught photography.
1st principal at Orchard Elementary in Orem.
Assistant Superintendent for District.
Left our district and worked for Apple in education.
Also, was a tutor for awhile on cruise ships!

At Heidi Park's retirement, 2012:
Jack Brown, Roger Olsen, Dave Dimond (currently serving a mission in Cameroon),
and Don Beckstrand

ROGER OLSEN:  1983-1989
Roger was the only principal not in attendance.
Roger came to Alpine Elementary sometime in the early 1970's.
I taught 5th grade with him for 2 years.
He was roommates in college with Paul Thompson, who replaced him in 5th grade.
He taught me how to teach my kids to play the ukulele and also clog.
(not at same time)
We did our first musical, "Tom Sawyer", while he was there.
Principal at Barratt Elementary in American Fork, then worked in the Education Department at BYU.

PAUL RASBAND:  1989-1996
Paul taught 5th grade in the district.  Was principal at Lehi Elementary before
coming to Alpine.  Loved BYU football!  He would put "Cougar Notes" at the bottom of his weekly memos to us!  The entire time he was principal, he was also a bishop, then the stake president of a brand new stake . . . American Fork Central.  He was also an American Fork "Band Dad"...which meant he helped other dads set up for the competition shows.
Was principal at Scera Park Elementary in Orem after Alpine.
Finished career in district over student services in the District Office.
Now works in Education Department at UVU.

DR. CLAUDIA WASDEN REID:  1996-2000
Claudia came to our school after being a teacher and principal in the Granite District.
She was a "teacher's principal!"
Parents were not allowed to request teachers for their children during
her time at Alpine.
Most balanced 4 years with students of my entire career!
She was a fast walker, with clicking heels on the tile.
You always knew when Claudia was coming!!!
After, she worked at the District Office.
Her husband passed away while she was at Alpine.
And then, low and behold...she married one of my 6th grade teachers!!!
He was assistant superintendent.

KARL BOWMAN:  2000-2002
I'm not sure where Karl taught in the district.
He was in the District Office before he was assigned to our school.
He was also over the Spanish Immersion program in the district.
(He's from Colonial Juarez, Mexico)

While he was principal, we went to the Olympics!
For a few years, you could buy a license plate with a school bus on it.
All of the proceeds went to pay for public school students along the
Wasatch Front to go to an Olympic event!!!
I got to go as a chaperone!
Our event was Curling.  Curling?  Really???
And, it was on President's Day at Weber State in Ogden!
All kids had to have a lanyard ID, with the teacher cell phone numbers on the back.
(Cell phones were a novelty, and these belonged to the school.)
Karl made them for all of us.  Then, he made scarves for everyone that was going!
They were blue, with ice skaters, fringe on end, with 2002 embroidered!!!
Well, I believe we had the best event!!!
The kids in my ward went to bobsled.  They had to stand the entire time!
Every once in a while, they saw a blur go by...bobsled.
Bitter cold!
We met at the school at 6:00 a.m.
No lesson plans, cuz it was a holiday!
Drove to Ogden.  We were in a building.  Had to keep coats on cuz the temperature
had to be kept cold, but it was doable.
We were supposed to always accompany a child to restroom, etc.
This was 5 months after 9-11.
But, there was only one way in, and one way out.  Security was at the door,
and we could relax.  Curling was exciting!!!
After, we ate our school sack lunches on the lawn of Ogden High.
Then, because the bus driver did not have a run, he drove us past the Olympic Torch
at Rice Eccles Stadium . . . GOOD TIMES!!!

Karl then became principal at Rocky Mountain Elementary in Lindon...where my BFF
of 50 years taught!  Current principal of new school, Harvest Elementary in Saratoga Springs.

DAVID STEPHENSON:  2002-2010
When David Stephenson was assigned to Alpine, my mom said we were
related, but she didn't know how.
David was from Nephi.  He used to mow my grandma's lawn when he was a little boy!
My great great grandparents are David's great great great grandparents!!!
David drove back and forth from Nephi his first year!!!
Then, they bought property in Highland, built a home, and moved up.
A few times, the faculty would have a Family Home Evening the Monday before
school started.  We had a BBQ at his home.  All faculty families came.
Loved Clear Creek with him!!!  The best!!!
Always had a smile on his face.  Always chewing gum.
Always involved with the kids! Always knew every child's name!
David made everybody, children and adults both, feel special.
After we broke him in, he became principal at Traverse Mountain Elementary, near Cabela's.
Rookie Principal of the Year.  Winner of Jon Huntsman Award, and $10,000!
After 3 years there, he is on his 2nd year as assistant superintendent.
He is over K-6 Orem schools.
Don't be surprised if he is the next Superintendent!!!

CAMI LARSEN:  2010-2014
Cami taught 1st grade at Forbes, and was the principal at Cedar Valley in Cedar Fort.
She is a runner, and loves BYU football!  Season tickets, like me!!!
We always knew when she was coming down the hall.  She walked fast, and had clicking heels.
(What is it with women principals, fast walking, and clicking heels?)
Cami is now the principal of Blackridge Elementary, in Eagle Mountain.
(It's actually across from The Ranches)

DAVE PERDUE:  2014-
Dave Perdue is the current principal.  He came from Oregon.
I know the teachers really like him.
So I worked under every principal, except the first and the last.

Here's someone special we can't forget...Sandra Walker!
Sandra worked at Alpine for 30 years.  A few years as an aide,
but most of the time as the secretary.
During her years there, she was Young Women's President, Relief Society President,
and Stake Relief Society President.
Her and Bonna were cousins, and grew up together.
You didn't see one without the other.
When Sandra retired, we had a dinner at "Mellor's Hidden Meadows" wedding
reception center...owned and operated by the 1st principal, Carl Mellor.
Every teacher that had ever taught there came...except Analee, who had a mandatory
Tab Choir rehearsal.
We had a little program.  Every principal spoke.
The funny thing?  Each of them said Sandra would get the irate parents
calmed down before they came to see them!!!
Sandra recently moved to St. George to be near family.

Everyone said their name, grades taught, and years taught at Alpine.
Oh...that purse!!!  Jealous???

And here we are...trying to get a good picture.
But, where's Don Beckstrand???
He's MIA...apparently behind the group, chatting!

I've been thinking the last couple of days about what made our school so great!
The kids were great!
The parents were great!
But, it started right at the top with the faculty!!!
We've actually had 7 teachers leave Alpine Elementary,
only to return to teach again at Alpine!

1.  Everyone pulled together to help each other.

2.  Everyone ate lunch in the workroom around the table.  We sat by different
people each day.

3.  We had AT LEAST 4 faculty parties a year!
Fall, Christmas, Spring, Last Day
One party, Vicky Haws was at a class.  Her husband came alone.
He said he was told if he wanted dinner, he had to go to the party to get it!

4.  We supported each other at showers, weddings, funerals, missionary farewells and homecomings...for faculty members and families.
When my dad passed away 11 years ago, nearly the entire faculty came to the viewing!!!
And, as I spoke the next day at the funeral, it was great to see my "faculty family."

Also, when I went to the temple for the first time, nearly the entire faculty was there!!!
(Not bad for a Saturday morning in January!)
My mom had not been endowed yet, and Ann Searle and Jane Boulter were my escorts!
It was sooo unbelievable being in the Celestial Room together!
We had a lunch after at Golden Coral.  Others joined us who couldn't come
to the temple for various reasons.
Then, the faculty gave me a corsage, and a huge framed picture of the Provo Temple!!!
I couldn't believe it!!!

5.  We went out to dinner and movies together.
And today, we go out to lunch.  Once a month.

6.  We went on trips together.
I have been to Hawaii, Shakespearean Festival, St. George, Caribbean Cruise,
New York City, Alaskan Cruise, Teacher Institute at Williamsburg, Boston, and the
Presidential Home Tour of Virginia with faculty friends.
Several other teachers, who have been gone for a long time, get together
quite often and go hiking.

7.  We went to events together
Broadway shows at the Capitol Theater, BYU Football games, Jazz games, concerts
(We've been to Neil Diamond several times, Barry Manilow, Mannheim Steamroller,
Kurt Bestor, Tina Turner with Cyndi Lauper, Cher with the Village People)

8.  We supported our profession...UEA, and rallied at capitol and Liberty Park.
100% UEA membership before I retired!

9.  We supported the kids...plays, talent shows, etc.
All teachers were at funerals when students or teachers passed away.

10.  Most of us taught together for 20-30 years!!!  How can you not become family???

11.  We were very generous.
We had a couple of teachers who had grandchildren die shortly after birth.
Enough money was gathered to pay total expenses!!!
We always had a "Christmas Project"...geared toward someone on the
faculty in great need.  We would always collect at least $400-$500!!!
I was surprisingly the recipient of this in 2007.
I had had foot surgery for torn tendons, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
Until Christmas Break, every weekday, 2 people from the faculty would
bring dinner to me and my mom.
For 2 weeks after my return in mid-January, my team had scheduled getting
me to school.  We actually all lived close...Linda Dibb, Angie Martinek (was in my ward),
and Condita Washburn.
What other faculty would do that???

12.  In my spare time of feeling the love at Alpine Elementary,
I played matchmaker!!!
I lined up Paul Finlayson with his wife, Cortney Mitchell Finlayson!

 Cooper LOVES Auntie Ann!!!
He must know he's here because of me!!!

And last, when I was diagnosed with Charcot Foot, had a dozen broken bones in
my foot, was in a boot and had a wheelchair, everyone went into action.
Because it was my right foot, I could not drive.
Lori Chadwick and her 9th grade twins, picked me up every morning.
After dropping the girls off at Timberline, I would text Dean, our custodian.
He would bring the wheelchair out.
If he was gone, Don Beckstrand brought it.
Annalea Warwood usually took me home.  If she couldn't,
Don Beckstrand or Condita Washburn would.
Don always came to my room after school to take me to the car,
and then put the wheelchair in Dean's office.
Heidi Park drove me to my AEA meetings at Mountain View High School,
and also to the District Office to meet about retirement.
A few close friends knew I was retiring, and helped.
Don actually brought his truck the last couple of days.  He not only
helped to bring my stuff home, he packed it downstairs, and put it away!
On the last day, the wheelchair came home.
Even in the summer, when I couldn't drive...Condita took me to
Michael and Jonathan Ruesch's farewell . . . and Adonna, who had retired,
would take me for a summer ride, and also to Rob and Katherine Chatfield's
farewell to be mission president in Uganda!!!
(I taught all 6 of their girls, plus a son-in-law.)

Is it any wonder why several people in the district requested to transfer to Alpine Elementary every year???
