FORMER STUDENTS . . . "WHERE ARE THEY NOW?"

It's always fun to see what former students are up to!

Here are what a few of my former students have been doing in the last 6 months.
(Pictures courtesy of Facebook)

ASHNA BORCHARDS HORMAN
Ashna with her favorite 5th grade teacher!
December 30, 2011

Here's Ashna with 3 original Mouskateers:  Bobby (my favorite), Sherry, and Tommy.
When Miss Mitchell grew up...she was a little girl towards the end of the original
"Mickey Mouse Club" show.  So fun watching it on the little
12 inch black and white t.v.
Who knew that a former student would pick them up, drive them around, and show them around!

Ashna is a Production Stage Manager for Disney California Adventure. She is in charge of the Atmosphere Show Five & Dime. She also worked on shows such as: Aladdin-AMusical Spectacular, World of Color, Red Car, Newsboys, and many special events throughout the year
I'm sure she got her love for Disney in my class!

DAN BLAKE
Walking the red carpet at the "Classy Awards!"
(I'm sure he learned to be classy in the 5th grade!)

...and on the cover of "Inc." magazine.

DAVID WESTERN
Playing with his band "Highbench" at Shea Stadium (Mets)
in New York City.
(Yes, his mom is Mrs. Western who taught at our school.  And guess what road
David grew up on?  You guessed it...Highbench!)

MATTHEW WESTERN
Matt (right) is David's (left) older brother.
They were appearing on the CBS Sunday Morning Show!
Matt is currently the director of all Marketing Development for a musical instrument company
in Asia!
(I'm sure David and Matt got their love for guitars in 5th grade when we used to play the ukulele!)

You gotta love this!
JESSICA ROSE
Jessica did a stint at our school for 3 weeks last year in the 5th grade.
This is her teaching in my classroom.
She is currently a 6th grade teacher at
Ridgeline Elementary in Highland.

SAM PAYNE
Sam is a popular entertainer and recording artist.

Another student who made it BIG...after playing the ukulele in my class!
ELIZA WREN PAYNE McDERMOTT

Sam's little sister is a very popular recording artist and
entertainer in England.
Once again...BOOYA for the ukulele!

MALINDA PACK POWERS
She and her husband were delegates to the
Republican National Convention!

JACOB FISH
Another former student who was a delegate to the
Republican National Convention!
(Governor Romney at the podium!)

Jacob meeting "Uncle Sam" at the Convention.

Jacob attending a Mitt Romney celebration.

CLINT MOWER
Clint is currently playing minor league football for the
Virginia Beach Destroyers . . . #57

Clint #39, playing for the University of Utah in the
SUGAR BOWL!
(He learned this move in our grade level kickball tournament!)

CHRIS HALL
Currently a pilot for a private plane company.

LARISA FRASER
Lara (what she went by in 5th grade) is a model.
She travels all over the world!
Her boyfriend won the National League MVP in baseball last season!

She also appeared on CSI Vegas this past spring (she's standing)

Lara also appears in magazines, on the cover of magazines, and ad signs like the one above.
(I'm sure I must have taught her her modeling skills!)

MALISSA CANDLAND LEVESQUE
Malissa (2nd from left) is standing by a White House door.
She is doing graduate work at George Washington University.
Malissa (I also taught her twin sister, Machelle!) works for the
WHITE HOUSE OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET!

Witnessing President Obama taking off in Marine One (Presidential helicopter)
is all in a day's work for Malissa!
Malissa, I'm definitely sure, learned how great the government can be in 5th grade!

 TEREN CHRISTENSEN
Teren has always been my hero!
Here he is receiving his Master's Degree in Sociology at BYU.
His father, pictured with him, is Todd Christensen.
Todd is also a hero...he was a star football player at BYU, and has two SUPER BOWL RINGS!
But, Teren is my real hero!

ERIC AUFHAMMER
Just another typical day for Eric...with the
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!
Eric is serving our country in Afghanistan.
It's not just a picture of the president from afar...it's WITH the president!

ALISON MILLS SKEA
Alison recently moved from North Carolina to Alpine.
She got here just in time to begin her dream job!
Alison is currently being a room mother in her daughter's classroom.
Who's her daughter's teacher???
Well, it's none other than
MISS MITCHELL!!!
(I think this is the BEST occupation of all!!!)

Many former students are successful!
I just think these students are pretty unique!
Former students...tell me your story!

WE LOVE ART!

We have the opportunity to spend one hour every Friday in art!
Our teacher is Mrs. Baer.

This is a sign that we made with
EVERY
child in the school!

It says RESPECT.
Every child drew in a square what they thought respect means.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BRASHER!!!

THE FUNKY RELAY

Our class did some pretty
FUNKY RELAYS!
You had to lie on your back, and pass a bean bag that
was between your feet...to the person's feet behind you.
If you dropped the bean bag, you had to start all over!
It took a lot of talent and coordination!

Don't you wish you had sparkly,
Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz
shoes like these girls???

PRESIDENTIAL HOME TOURS OF VIRGINIA

I had the opportunity this summer to take a graduate class through
 "Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge."

This is the 5th class through them.
Two were totally free and the other three,
I used Foundation money that I had donated to myself
(before they stopped letting you do that).

I have also had 2 free history trips with the
Teaching American History
though the Alpine School District.
So, seven free/partial free history trips are just fine with me!!!
I love seeing the history of our country in person, plus...I love making friends all over the country!

On this trip, it was my second time to:
Charlottesville, Virginia
Monticello
University of Virginia
Mount Vernon
Stafford County, Virginia
Richmond, Virginia
and my 4th time to Fredericksburg, Virginia
(I didn't count Washington, D.C., cuz the first time, I just sat in the airport!)

I love it more each time!

Toilet...notice there is no tank.
To flush the toilet, you pulled a chain.
This was in the early 1920s.

LINCOLN'S COTTAGE
Summer home of Abraham Lincoln
Washington D.C.

To escape the heat of the summer, Lincoln and his family lived in this cottage.
It was like "Camp David" is today.
Lincoln still traveled every day to the White House.
Many soldiers would sleep on the cottage lawn and were fed by the staff during the Civil War.

GEORGE WASHINGTON'S OFFICE
Winchester, Virginia

George Washington used the building here as a military office from
September 1755-December 1756
when he was 23 years old.

WOODROW WILSON'S BIRTHPLACE
Staunton, Virginia

(A cool side note.  My assistant history teacher in the district,
Dallas, was teaching school after he graduated from BYU.
After teaching about 3 years, his bishop gave him a blessing.
In the blessing, he was told he MUST go on a mission!
So, he quit teaching, and was called to a mission in Virginia.
It was here, in Staunton, Virginia, that he met his wife!)

He is the one that got me on my first trip with Freedom's Foundation.
I knew it was legitimate, because I knew him.
Thanks for the opportunity to participate in 5 history trips!

ST. JOHN'S CHURCH
Richmond, Virginia

This is the church where
Patrick Henry gave his famous speech...
". . . Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains or slavery?
Forbid it, Almighty God!
I know not what course that others may take...
But as for me, Give me Liberty, or give me Death!"

Check out what pages the hymns are on!

Harrison died after one month in office!
His plantation is just down the road from Harrison's.
Tyler's grandson currently lives in the home!
WHAT???
John Tyler was president in the 1840s.
He was born in  1790.
He had 15 children by two different wives.
His second wife was dating Tyler's son when they met.
Tyler's 13th child was born in 1865 at the end of the Civil War when he was 75.
That son had a son born in 1928 (the year my dad was born) when he was 63.
AMAZING!
We've had 34 U.S. President's since John Tyler!
