ALPINE FIRE PART 6

In the mid 80's, the North Mountain
in Alpine caught on fire, due to carelessness.
It happened right after school began.
The kids used to stand outside on the playground
and watch the fire.
Then, the air was too bad, and the kids
had to stay in.

Our secretary, Sandra Walker, was also
the Stake Relief Society President, when
there was just one stake.
She had to coordinate which wards would feed
the firefighters which meal.
The firefighters "home away from home" were
in army tents in the park on Main Street.

That fire, and the next 5 fires,
were started by man.
Fireworks (more than once), a back hoe,
and this one . . . target shooting.

I started to see pictures of this fire
on Facebook when I was in New Orleans.
When I flew home, I could see the fire
from the plane.  We were 2 hours late leaving
New Orleans.
When we flew over Alpine, it was pitch dark,
even from my first class seat!
It made me cry!
(When I flew home from Philadelphia once,
it seemed while looking over Utah, the
entire state was on fire!)

Some things never change!

This is Nancy's house, with the fire behind.
The photo was taken from Creekside Park.

MY ALPINE

Since I taught in Alpine for 33 years,
I definitely consider it to be my
"home away from home."

Because Nick Gentry's funeral was near the
foothills, I decided to drive up after.

This was where I took my class hiking for years!
We walked from the school to the North Mountain.
Boy, I took walking for granted!!!

When we first went, the road was dirt
from the top of Grove Drive.
Now it's paved all the way!

We did a lot of learning about the history
and geology of the area, did experiments,
ate lunch, and went to the bowery for a water fight.

These pictures are GORGEOUS,
but...we always went in October.
Nothing says beauty like Alpine in the fall!!!

This area meant that we had arrived!

NANCY'S RETIREMENT CELEBRATION

Nancy Clegg Pope taught with me for 30 years.
1983-2013.
She was "Miss Clegg" until July 1988.
We always had a great time together!
We hung out together, and with Don and roommates.
Once, we went to a fireside that Steve Young spoke at.
He talked about going on a date with Sharlene Wells...Miss America.
In August of 1985, we went to Hawaii together!
It was sooooo fabulous!
We also had several "Girls Night Out" at Jazz games for her birthday.
I've also taken her, Karl, and Nathan to Jazz games.

On Tuesday, May 19, Nancy's retirement party was held at:
(pretty cute)

There were soooo many former faculty members there!
