GLADYS

Gladys Knight is an iconic singer.
She became popular in thr laste 60's-early 70's
as the lead singer in the group,
Gladys Knight and the Pips.
The "Pips" were her brother and cousins.
Her most popular song was
Midnight Train to Georgia.

Gladys's son became a member of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He had the missionaries teach her.
She became a member.

Gladys also appeared on the show,
Dancing With The Stars

Many music stars were asked to perform the
National Anthem and the half time show of
Super Bowl LIII, where they are seen by
billions of people around the world.
They declined.
They were still supporting Collin Kapernick, formerly
of the San Francisco 49ers. Kaperick took a knee
during the National Anthem to protest
police violence and supporting black people.
When his contract expired, it was not renewed,
and no other team picked him up.
This was in 2016, and people are still supporting him.

Gladys Knight was asked to sing the
National Anthem, and she accepted.
It was one of the 2 best renditions ever . . . along with
Whitney Houston.

God bless America, and God bless Gladys Knight!

SUPER BOWL LII

THE
BEAT THE

41-33

This was the first time that the
Eagles have won a
Super Bowl!

The Patriots are 5-3
with 40 year old Tom Brady
as the quarterback.

Not much defense on both sides.
Kyle Van Oy, Patriots via BYU,
was fabulous!

Very few penalties.
Fewer punts.

Halftime show, Justin Timberlake. . . meh.
No greater halftime show than
Michael Jackson
when the game was played at the
Rose Bowl
in Pasadena, California.
(Last time Justin did the halftime, it was
with Michael's sister, Janet.  First time
the phrase "Wardrobe Malfunction"
was introduced.)

The Eagles lucked out with two
touchdowns being allowed that
should have been reversed.
Both of them, the player did not
have control of the ball.
The play by play announcers
could not believe it!!!

Good for Philadelphia!

I have been to both cities:
Philadelphia and Boston.

PRE SUPER BOWL

That one time my Primary kiddo, #66, blocked for
Tom Brady!
I was the Primary Pianist and in the Presidency when
Jordan Devey was in Primary.  My mom taught him in Primary.
Jordan did not play high school football!
He walked on at Snow College.

This is a great article!

NFL: AF Band Alumni Jordan Devey's progress has been music to Patriots' ears.
Jordan Devey stood 6-foot-5 and weighed 270 pounds as a high school senior.
So it was hardly surprising he spent his Friday nights on a football field and performed
well enough to find himself entertaining several scholarship offers. There was one twist.
Devey wasn't playing football at American Fork High, but the tuba in the school's nationally
acclaimed marching band and it was his musical proficiency that drew the attention
of several colleges in his native Utah.

"I went to every football game and sat on the sidelines," said Devey who
gave up he sport after eighth grade due to intense knee pain from having
Osgood-Schlatters disease. "Most of my friends who weren't in the band were on
the football field. They always gave me a hard time trying to get me out there
"I wanted to, it was just one of those things where we had the big picture in mind
rather than the here and now."  That prudent approach paid off.  The here and now
for Devey includes being an offensive lineman for the Patriots, who signed the
undrafted rookie to their eight-man practice squad in early September just days
after he was cut for a second time by the Baltimore Ravens.
Devey's journey to New England was circuitous, protracted and, especially, rewarding
in a personal, pious and professional way.

After  graduating from high school in 2006, Devey took a job working security on the
graveyard shift for a computer company. Twelve hours a day, five days a week he
checked diesel rigs bringing in shipments.

From there it was off to Costa Rica to serve a two-year mission as a member
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Devey loved everything about
the country from its beautiful beaches to friendly folks.  Well, mostly friendly  Trying
to get people to listen to his Mormon message was always demanding and
occasionally demoralizing.  "You get a lot of doors slammed in your face,"
Devey said. "You see the best and the worst of people when you're doing that
because a lot of times it is cold calling."  His experience in Central America, while
focused on serving others, helped foster his individual growth.  "I definitely loved it
and I learned a lot of things that I still apply in my life, about working hard and learning
new things — I had to learn Spanish while I was down there," the easygoing and
enthusiastic 25-year-old said. "So a lot of life lessons I picked up down there that will
stay with me for a while."

When Devey returned to the United States, he felt a bit out of place after having been
immersed in Latin culture for so long. He had also grown another 2 inches and lost
50 pounds due to a diet heavy on rice and beans and a daily regimen that included
lots of walking.  Devey also shed the knee pain that had beset him for years and decided
to walk on to the football team at Snow College, not far from his hometown. He not only
made the squad, he started for two years and — when was the last time you heard a linema
honored this way — was named the Snow Cats' Offensive Player of the Year on a team
that wound up being ranked seventh in the country in 2010.

Now 6-foot-7 and more than 300 pounds, the athletic scholarships poured in.
Devey settled on the University of Memphis, where he studied accounting,
got married and played every snap in every game while seeing time at left tackle,
right guard and right tackle over the next two years. Oh yeah, he was named team
MVP after his senior season in 2012.  Although he went undrafted in April, Devey was
signed by the Ravens right after the conclusion of the seventh and final round. He spent
spring and summer in Baltimore before being released, re-signed and released again,
leading to his becoming a Patriot.

Utah will always be home, but Devey has settled in quite nicely
in Massachusetts.  "I absolutely love it here," he said. Coach (Bill) Belichick does
a really good job. Everyone here is blue collar. It's all about going to work and the team
and getting better every day. That's the kind of person I am, so I felt like I fit right in with
these guys and I couldn't imagine a better group of guys to be around."

As for the tuba, Devey came home from Costa Rica and discovered
he couldn't blow a note. That's about the only thing that hasn't worked out these
 last few years for him.

ZERO FATALITIES AT THE SUPER BOWL

UDOT sponsored a contest to make a commercial
about safe driving.
Amy Miller created this about not wearing seat belts,
crashing, and being zipped up in a body bag.

Amy's friend, Lauren Hall, was the girl
who narrated it, and was zipped into the bag.

I taught both of Lauren's brothers.
She also was involved with the luncheon for
Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
One year, Lauren sat next to me for an
entire BYU football season!

The winning commercial was seen during
the Super Bowl pregame show, regionally during
the Super Bowl, and also during the
State Basketball Finals with Lone Peak vs Bingham.

SUPER BOWL LI

THE

BEAT THE

34 -28  OT
(first ever OT in a Super Bowl!)

First, it was a 25 point lead by Atlanta:
28-3 with 8:31 in the 3rd quarter.

Then, 28-9
28-12
28-20
28-28

Overtime in college is perfect.
With the coin toss, you want to go second,
so you can see what the other team did.
Each team starts with their ball on the
25 yard line.  Four downs.
Then, the other team goes.
If it's tied at the end of first overtime,
the team that went second now goes first.
This continues until a winner is declared.

In the pros, it's sudden death.
First one to score wins.
So, New England won the coin toss,
and they marched down the field and scored.

Never underestimate Tom Brady!
He has played in 7 Super Bowls!
Record?
5-2
BEST RECORD EVER!!!

Former BYU Cougar,
Kyle Van Noy,
was in his 2nd year of playing
for the Detroit Lions, when he was traded.
PERFECT TIMING!

AND OF COURSE,
A LITTLE LOL!

THE
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

28-24

IN SUPER BOWL #49.

SEATTLE ACTUALLY HAD THE GAME IN THE BAG!
THEY HAD 4 TRIES TO GO A COUPLE OF YARDS FOR THE WIN.
ON 2ND DOWN, WITH THE BEST RUNNING BACK IN THE GAME IN THE BACKFIELD,
THE QUARTERBACK THREW THE BALL.

INTERCEPTION!

THE PLAYER WHO INTERCEPTED IT WAS EVEN A ROOKIE!!!

THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HAVE BEEN MY FAVORITE FOOTBALL
TEAM SINCE STEVE YOUNG RETIRED FROM THE 49ERS.

I REALLY LIKE THEM, BECAUSE I'VE BEEN THERE TWICE.
(I'VE BEEN TO SEATTLE TWICE, BUT I'VE NEVER LIKED THEM.)

LAST TIME I WAS THERE, IN APRIL OF 2009, WE WENT TO SEE THE
REENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF CONCORD.
WE TALKED TO THE MISSIONARIES THERE.
ONE, EVEN LIVED AROUND THE CORNER FROM ME...BUT A DIFFERENT STAKE.
WHEN I ASKED WHERE THEY LIVED, THEY TOLD ME
RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE PATRIOTS STADIUM!

MY FAMILY HAD A SUPER BOWL PARTY.
WE HAD EVERYONE BUT CAMILLE, ASHLEY, AND THEIR FAMILIES,
AND KIM.
(NEW BABY FOR ASHLEY)
WE HAD THE BEST FOOD!!!

YUMMMM . . . WHAT A SPREAD!!!

IPHONE PROBLEMS...BLURRY IF SOMEONE MOVES.
COURTNEY & COLE DO THEIR "PATRIOTS DANCE" AFTER FIRST TOUCHDOWN.

THE "LITTLES" PLAYED IN THE GUEST BEDROOM.
(CARTER, LILY, OAKLEY)
NOTICE THE RED AND YELLOW "CONNECT 4" PIECES.
ALL LINED UP IN A PATTERN.
THEY WERE DECORATING.

HALFTIME WITH KATY PERRY.
IT WAS SOOOO WEIRD!
THE OLDER KIDS LOVED IT!

KATIE & McKAY SWING COLE

THE TWINNERS TURN TO SWING.
BROOKLYN & ALLY

McKAY IS SNOOZING.

BROOKLYN BLOCKING LORI.
DON'T KNOW WHAT KATIE'S DOING.

CHEEZY ALLY
HEIDI TOLD ME THAT WHEN YOU TAKE A PICTURE OF
THE TWINS, WHEN THEY SEE THE FLASH...THE "CHEESE."
THERE'S ENOUGH TIME BETWEEN THE FLASH AND IT
GOING OFF TO GET A GOOD PICTURE.

ALLY CHEESING WITH HER MOM

HALEY, BROOKLYN, KATIE, ALLY, & HEIDI HO

I GOT THIS SHIRT FOR CARTER LAST YEAR AT THE JAZZ GAME.
HIS HEAD BECOMES THE PLAYER'S HEAD.
HE WAS ROOTING FOR THE SEAHAWKS.
WHEN I ASKED HIM WHY...HE SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW
WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL A PATRIOT WAS!!!

AND THE BACK

NEXT YEAR WILL BE THE 50TH SUPER BOWL!!!
I HAVE SEEN EVERY ONE!!!
WHEN THEY FIRST DID IT IN 1966, IT WAS AN EXPERIMENT.
WINNERS OF EACH CONFERENCE PLAYED AGAINST EACH OTHER.
JUST LIKE EAST & WEST PLAY EACH OTHER IN BASKETBALL.
I WAS IN 2ND GRADE.

ONE OF MY PRIMARY KIDDOS IS GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL! (AND NOT AS A SPECTATOR)

I was either in the presidency, or
Primary pianist when Jordan went through Primary.
Mom was his Primary teacher...because she was
everyone's Primary teacher!
His parents are Kerry and Leslie.

This article was on the AF Bands Facebook page.

It has been brought to my attention that a former AF Band Alumni will be playing in the Super Bowl this Saturday!! This story has been on our website this year, but I've copied and pasted it to share here.

Enjoy!
