DONATION QUEEN

Alpine District Foundation.
We learned years ago to donate to our own classes.
I donated $3 a month for years.
Then, I got smart!
$200 a month for my class!
This paid for one of my tuitions for
FFVF trip!
Then, I cut back to $100.
Loved shopping to get items for my class,
especially at the end of year!

End of year?
This caused problems.
When I retired, my secretary, Lisa,
said she would pay my bills, then distribute the
money to where I wanted it.
(Even though no one donated to me, except me,
I couldn't have the money)

Well, the Foundation said I had to have it moved
by May 30, or the Foundation put it in their general fund.
Lisa explained it to them.
Nope.
I lose.
Told Cami, and I was ready to go to AEA.
Finally, they caved!
I had a lot in account!

I donated to:
$100
Teachers of:
Courtney
Jaycie
Camry
Preston

Jody Kyburz
Lori Chadwick
Nancy Pope

$50
Carissa Allen
Lisa Hoover
Cami Larsen
Ranae Black
Paul Finlayson
Karen Peterson
Maureen Wallace
BreAnn Wayman
Matt Goff
Condita Washburn
Diane Walter
Annalea Warwood
Analee Wiser
(I didn't donate to Don, cuz he had tons in his account)

Since I retired, I have made donations to all
the kids' teachers.
I donate $50 to each teacher,
(including preschoolers at a district preschool)
through the district's Foundation.
Tax write-off . . . yes, please!

I also pay for all preschool tuition.
Starting next year, I will buy the
junior high and high school yearbooks.
(Too many teachers)

Last fall, I donated to:
Sage Hills
Saratoga Springs
Camry's teachers (2...job share) . . . $50 ($25 each)
Addie's Reading Recovery teacher . . . $25

This spring:
Sage Hills
Saratoga Springs
Jaycie . . . $50
Preston . . . $50
Carter . . . $50
Addie . . . $50

Goshen
Goshen . . . kids live in Genola
Haley . . . $50
Lily . . . $50

Deerfield
Cedar Hills
Oakley . . . $50

Riley
Salt Lake City
Shayla . . . $50

TOTAL
$475

I like to take a printed copy of the donation
to the teacher. . . to meet them, and show my support.
I write a little thank you note on the donation printout,
and tell them it's from me and the child.

Most were extremely gracious and excited!
My favorite was Addie's Reading Recovery teacher,
Mrs. Pizzai.
One teacher was very aloof.
Ignored me that I was even there.

I have the child come over when I talk
to the teacher.
Some tried to ignore that I was there
until I motioned them over.

When Carter saw me, he yelled, "Aunt Ann!"
Haley had been testing.  They were taking a
break outside.  When she saw me,
she excitedly ran over!
But, the best one was Shay.
Her class was at recess before lunch.
The secretary took me down when they
came in for lunch.
She, with a few friends trailing behind,
ran over and hugged me.

Since all the kids were testing
(Since beginning of April),
found these little memes.

I DON'T MISS TESTING!

Had to share this first:
Once in a while, I get a thank you note from a teacher.
But, I never get one from an entire class!
This is from Preston's class!
Love his signature on top!

 Well, well, well!
A certain little girl named Emy Osmond
signed her name inside the "O"
Does that last name ring a bell???
Her dad is Jeremy Osmond.
Her grandpa is Donny Osmond!
Yes, that Donny Osmond, who was on the walls of my bedroom!
TV personality, recording artist, game show host, nightclub singer,
broadway star, talk show host, headliner at "Stadium of Fire" . . . where our 5th graders sang back up to him when he sang a song from "Joseph",
and of course,
Mirror Ball Winner on Dancing With the Stars!
Emy is the only granddaughter of Donny.

Emy has a brother in 5th grade with Camry.

One day, I got this text from Kim:

and these photos:

And, this is what Donny posted on his Instagram:

SCHOOL DAYS! SCHOOL DAYS! NEVER LET ME GO!

Oh, those good ol' school days!
I had these all through my schooling.
1963-1980
(Kindergarten - BYU)
And, about my first 15 years of teaching!
1980-1995
(Except I had a cute alphabet!)

A funny note about the clock:
In my classroom, it was set on the wall,
and could not be taken off.
The clock would be reset at the district office.
Sooo fun to watch the hands go around automatically!

Loved this song I sang in Program Bureau at Dixie Jr. College.

School days so they tell us, are the most sublime of our life.
We'll have the time of our life.
It's the absolute prime of our life.
They tell us school days are golden
In the olden days that might have been true,
But, in the olden days, they like torture and slavery, too
What are ya gonna do? Wooo.

School days so they tell us are the sweetest days that we'll know.
And, if that really is so,
Well, it comes as a but of a blow.
I mean if school days are the best of our lives,
Imagine the rest of our lives.
School Days!  School Days!
Never let me go!

WORLD'S FAIR

"WHAT'S A WORLD'S FAIR?" YOU ASK.
WELL, IT'S AN EXHIBITION HELD SOMEWHERE IN
THE WORLD.  THERE'S A THEME, AND
COUNTRIES, BUSINESSES, RELIGIONS, ETC.
CAN HAVE AN EXHIBITION INSIDE OF A PAVILION.

YOU DON'T HEAR ABOUT THEM LIKE YOU DID
WHEN I WAS GROWING UP.
MANY FAIRS HAVE A PERMANENT STRUCTURE
THAT IS LEFT BEHIND TO REMEMBER THE FAIR.

ST. LOUIS ARCH
LONDON FARIS WHEEL
GLOBE IN NEW YORK WHERE US OPEN TENNIS
TOURNAMENT IS LOCATED
SEATTLE SPACE NEEDLE

NOW, THEY ARE CALLED "EXPOS."
THERE WILL BE ONE THIS YEAR IN KHAZISTAN.
WHO KNEW?

I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF PLAYING IN A CONCERT
AT THE 1974 WORLD'S FAIR IN SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
(HOME OF JOHN STOCKTON...WE STAYED IN THE
DORMS AT GONZAGA UNIVERSITY, JOHN'S ALMA MATER!)
I WAS WITH THE AMERICAN FORK HIGH SCHOOL BAND.
IT WAS THE SUMMER BETWEEN MY SOPHOMORE
AND JUNIOR YEAR.

I ONLY REMEMBER 2 OF THE PAVILIONS:

USA

CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS.

I REMEMBER THEM BECAUSE THE USA HAD
THE COOLEST EXHIBIT OF OLD FASHIONED BATHTUBS.
THE MORMON PAVILION WAS SHAPED LIKE
THE GOLD PLATES.
(JOSEPH SMITH RECEIVED THESE, AND TRANSLATED
THE CARVINGS ON THEM INTO THE
BOOK OF MORMON.)

OK.  DONE WITH MY MEMORIES.

THE AFTERNOON AFTER THE CHRISTMAS SING AT GOSHEN,
WAS THE 6TH GRADE WORLD'S FAIR AT
SAGE HILLS ELEMENTARY.
JAYCIE WAS ASSIGNED THE COUNTRY OF COLOMBIA.
THE PROJECT WAS LONG, AND HARD.
JAYCIE ENDED UP WITH 22 TYPED PAGES!
MORE THAN ANYTHING I HAD IN COLLEGE
OR GRADUATE CLASSES!!!
ANYWAY, I HELPED QUITE A BIT,
BUT I AM MOST PROUD OF SUGGESTING
SHE OUTLINE HER MAPS WITH A SHARPIE!
BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

AND NOW, I KNOW MORE ABOUT COLOMBIA
THAN I EVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE!
(INCLUDING THE SPELLING IS COLOMBIA NOT COLUMBIA!)

SOOOO PROUD OF JAYCIE AND
HER HARD WORK AND DEDICATION!!!

WEST ELEMENTARY

I attended West Elementary in St. George, Utah for one year...kindergarten.
It was 2 or 3 blocks west of our home.  Our address was
25 North 100 West.
(Easy to remember...because the shop address is 50 North 100 West)
I loved going to school there!
The biggest reason I loved it, is because my mom
taught 2nd grade at the same school!!!
The 2 things that I remember the most about her teaching there was:
1.  I had a horrible kindergarten picture. It was retaken with my
mom's class.  Much better!
2.  We saw the movie "Pollyanna" as a school.
Yup.  That Pollyanna.  With Hayley Mills.
Because kindergarten was half day, I only got to see part
of the movie.  I got to watch the rest of the movie with my mom's class!

"Our D on the hillside so bold, cherished emblem of them all!"
This was the view of the Black Hill from our school, before homes
were built on it.

My mom's classroom was on the left.
It was facing Tabernacle Street.

This was the back of the school where we lined up.  Each classroom in the back had it's own door.  Every Friday, we walked across a little bridge, with a nickel, to get an ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen!

This is how the playground looked when I was there!

The big trees were in front of the classrooms on the Tabernacle side.

And now, this is my school.
The gorgeous trees are still there.

And here's the wonderful playground:

My mom had a student at West Elementary named
LoyAnn McArthur.  She adored my mom!!!
She would stop now and then in American Fork to visit.
She became a teacher because of my mom's influence.
She also was a member of the short-lived ADK chapter in St. George.
I found her on Facebook and friended her.  Then friended her to my mom.
Then, many others started requesting to be my mom's friend, and
they were reminiscing about their great 2nd grade class!!!

Aunt Pat made mom a scrapbook with all of her class pictures.
I took pictures of the class photos from West Elementary.
they were always taken in the classroom, not on the stage steps.
Some had just my mom.  Then the principal, Mr. Frei, was in others with them.

I loved my mom's wooden numbers!!!
Notice President John F. Kennedy hanging up!

When my mom retired, I took the Washington and Lincoln that
she has hanging in this picture!
(Allen Feller is the 6th boy in on middle row.  He was
LDSSA president my Freshman year, and
Studentbody President my Sophomore year.)

And then, this message was sent to me on Facebook:

  • Conversation started April 10
  • K'Lynn Wood
    K'Lynn Wood

Are you really my 2nd grade teacher from St George 's daughter!?!!? No wonder you were such a good teacher! That is so amazing. Please give your mother a hug for me. K'Lynn Avery ,now Wood.
  • Ann Mitchell
    Ann Mitchell

Holy Cow!!! We lived in St George through my kindergarten year. My dad taught at the college when it was downtown. The seniors and juniors in high school were with freshmen and sophomores in college. My dad taught Elder Holland in high school and college! When they moved to new campus, my dad was low in seniority, and was asked to teach high school. He wanted college. So we moved to his hometown, AF. My mom tried to get hired in Alpine, Nebo, and Provo districts. They only hired brand new teachers. They were all putting husbands through BYU, then quit. Saves $. She went to Jordan District for an application, and was hired on the spot! They wanted experience! She taught 38 years total! I went to Dixie...1976-1978. Associate of Arts. My roommate married Dale Esplin! Can't believe what a small world!!! I'll friend you to her on FB! She turned 80 last month!

  • I taught K'Lynn's children, Tyler and Melody!
When Tyler was in my class, Melody was in kindergarten.
Melody came down to my room when kindergarten was over.
When I started to get my class ready for lunch, Tyler would leave
to walk Melody home, and eat lunch.
    Really nice kids!!!
According to Facebook, both went to BYU.
Tyler served a mission.  Melody spent some time in England.
Not sure what they're up to now.
    I need to find out!

    K'Lynn's class picture.
She was sooo easy to pick out!  Tall, and looks so much like her kids,
    especially Melody!

    Next to my mom.

    By Mr. Frei
Notice the "Mrs. Mitchell" above Mr. Frei's head.
    It was burned on wood.
She always had it in whatever classroom she taught in.
When I began teaching, I asked Jack Brown, a 6th grade teacher
at my school who did woodworking, to make me a "Miss Mitchell."
Now, it hangs on my teacher wall.

    K'Lynn now.
