2019 READS

2019
was a great year for reading!

I'm one of those people
who has to physically
hold the book, and turn the pages!
(One of my biggest pet peeves were people
who licked their fingers to turn the pages,
or pass out papers.)

Looking at my list, I  pretty
much read what I enjoy...and
that looks like historical fiction
and biographies.

Here are my 2019 reads:
(In alphabetical order)
 My Favorite Jazz Player

 I read this book to my class . . . and, I've
been to Jamestown, Virginia twice.

Gail Miller is the owner of the Utah Jazz
(and a billionaire).
She became owner when her husband passed away.
Great book and a fast read.

One of my favorite NBA players. Married into the
Kardashian-Jenner clan (and divorced out of them).
Was a contestant on Dancing With the Stars fall of 2019.

I have followed her blog for years!

This book is about a counselor in my
bishopric when I was in elementary school.
I taught 2 of his granddaughters in 5th grade.

 Another blog I had followed.

We studied the New Testament in Sunday School
in 2019.  In teaching US History to my 5th graders,
there was at least 1 or 2 who would pick up
that King James (Jamestown was named after, etc)
was the same King James on the Bible.

The current prophet of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(LDS, Mormon).
He has 9 daughters and 1 son, sings on perfect pitch,
and was a world renowned heart surgeon.
He also performed open heart surgery on my dad in 1979.

These 2 books were soooo interesting!
I was reading them at the same time.
I liked he First Ladies book the best of these two!

 Great read about
President George W. Bush's twins.
How would you like to grow up with
your grandpa as president, and then your dad?

WOW!  A really true love story set
in a concentration camp.

I read this because everyone else
was reading it.

Another person that I was following on her blog.

I was really late reading this book.
Rented the movie on my tv.

Currently Reading:
A great read!  These 2 men are about
the same age, with the same background.
At one point, they lived close to each
other in Illinois, but their paths never crossed.

Short stories by people involved in the
life of Larry H. Miller, Utah Jazz President
until he passed away.

Our course of study in Sunday School
for 2020.

A continuation of the president of the church
that I'm a member of.
Expands on his wife's passing, meeting and
marrying his new wife, becoming the prophet
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I went with my BFF to his 95th birthday celebration!
I'm so in awe that he walks without any assistance and
stood at a microphone with nothing to lean on
(I can't do that), and how well he plays the piano!

History of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints people  1815-1846
(Before the Church was established through
coming (the Pioneers) to the Salt Lake Valley.

This is the book I would take on my
history trips back East to give to the instructor
as a gift.
The authors are brothers.
The first author is currently a
representative in Congress!
(The book was written before he became a Congressman)

.
This book was written by a man who worked
at the White House and then became the Chief Usher.
He was there for the last
part of FDR's administration and retired a
couple of months into Richard Nixon's administration.
I was quite surprised that the couple that were
the biggest partiers were the Johnson's!
(He was president through most of my elementary school years)

I've read Laura Bush's biography.
I have two more first ladies books waiting to read:
Barbara Bush and Michelle Obama.

Reading more in 2019 was a big goal of mine!
I kept books in the bathrooms, next to my recliner,
and in my car.  It was great to read while waiting
for groceries to be delivered to my car, and also
waiting for the doors to open at Jazz games.

THE BOOK OF MORMON CHALLENGE

The prophet of my Church,
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
President Russell M. Nelson
(he did my dad's open heart surgery in 1979),
gave the women of the Church a challenge.
To read the Book of Mormon by the end of 2018.
The challenge?
He gave this at the Women's Conference on October 6!

Of course, a chart breaking down the Book of Mormon
so you could see how much you needed to read each day
to finish by the end of the year, magically appeared on social media.
I had to have it!

I kept track of my daily reading.  I used a color pen every
time that I finished a square.
I put the date when I finished a row, and a date in the box
when I finished a "book" of the Book of Mormon,
along with a temple sticker.

Here is my breakdown by rows, and books.
Row 1:  October 7 - October 11
Row 2:  October 11 - October 15
Row 3:  October 16 - October 18
Row 4:  October 18 - October 24
Row 5:  October 24 - October 29
Row 6:  October 30 - November 6
Row 7:  November 7 - November 18
Row 8:  November 19 - November 27
Row 9:  November 28 - December 6
Row 10:  December 7 - December 12
Row 11:  December 13 - December 15
Row 12:  December 15 - December 17 + 1

My longest row was Row 7 . . . 11 days:  November 7 - November 18
(Alma 22 - Alma 41)

Books in the Book of Mormon
1 Nephi:  October 7 - October 11
2 Nephi:  October 11 - October 17
Jacob:  October 17 - October 20
Enos:  October 20
Jarom:  October 20
Omni:  October 20
Words of Mormon:  October 20
Mosiah:  October 20 - October 28
Alma:  October 29 - December 2
Helaman:  December 2 - 10
3 Nephi:  December 10 - December 13
4 Nephi:  December 13
Mormon:  December 13 - December 15
Ether:  December 16 - December 17
Moroni:  December 17

I finished 6 books in one day each:  Enos, Jarom, Omni.
Words of Mormon, 4 Nephi, and Moroni
The longest book?  Alma: 35 days (63 chapters)

Here's my chart:

I read all of the Book of Mormon on my phone.
About 1/3 of it was read with the audio on the phone.
(It's nice to hear how some words and names are REALLY pronounced!)

The last time I read it on a timeline, was a challenge from
2 prophets ago . . . President Gordon B. Hinckley.
It was from August 1 - December 31, 2 months longer than this one.

The shortest time I read the Book of Mormon was 24 hours.
I was a junior in high school.
Our Seminary had a Book of Mormon read.a.thon.
We started Friday afternoon at 4:00 and finished
Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
They played the tape on the building speakers.
They also supplied us with dinner, breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

It was hard, and I'm pretty sure that I slept through some of it.

DICK & JANE & SALLY, TOO

I love these characters!
Everyone my age learned to read from
the "Dick & Jane" books!
Dick and Jane were brother and sister.
Sally was a toddler sister (you can tell by the shoes).
Spot, the dog.
Puff, the kitten.
Tim was Sally's teddy bear.
Oh, and there was Father and Mother, too!

One day when I was probably in Junior High,
Mom came home and said there were two black
kids in the Dick & Jane books!

***GASP***

They were twins.
Pam & Penny.

Oh, the great memories!!!

FAVORITE SUMMER READS

MY TOP 3 SUMMER READS ARE:

This book is about Al Fox, a young lady who grew
up in Rochester, New York, met the missionaries, joined
the LDS Church, and moved to Utah.
As the title says, she was very tatted up.
She was an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple
one month after being endowed, is a
motivational speaker, married, and had a baby.

Before Columbine, Sandy Hook, 9-11,
there was the Cokeville Miracle.
I was finishing up my 10th year of teaching when this
happened at Cokeville, Wyoming.
The teachers and students were held hostage by
a deranged former law officer in the city and his wife.
They were the only two to die in the incident.

I began reading the blog,
"NieNie Dialogues" years ago.
Written by Stephanie Nielsen, many of
my former students who were blogging, had her
button on the side of their blogs.
I began reading it, too.
And then, she and her husband were in a
horrific plane crash.
Following her blog has been amazing!

All three of these books are nonfiction,
and all were easy, fast reads!

AUNT TAN

Addie has been going to Reading Recovery.
Her teacher wrote a sentence down that Addie dictated to her.
They cut the words, and Addie had to practice
putting the sentence in order at home, then gluing it in the book.
Ashley decided to do a little correction.
The teacher's note was hysterical!!!
I guess when you say it fast, it does sound like
"Aunt Tan!"
Ally calls me "Tant Tan",
but her mother calls me
"Antenna!"

Also, Shalana's granddaughter in kindergarten
had a similar experience.
They were testing her for speech.  One of the
things they said Oakley had a hard time with was
the "Gr" blend.  The teacher said she will say
"Da'ma" instead of "Grandma."
Brittney said that's what they all call her . . . "Da'Ma!"

THE HELP

I just finished the book, "The Help,"
by Kathryn Stockett.
It is a fabulous book!
"The Help" is set in Jackson, Mississippi.
It is about a white woman and 3 black
maids, or "the help", and how life is
in the early 1960's.
It has about 524 pages.

Of course, I loved it.  It's historical fiction!
I saw the movie a few years ago.
I will see the movie again, and maybe
read the book again.
I have to do both several times to remember them
and endear them in my heart!

Now, I'm currently reading "Nameless,"
written by my former student,
Jennifer Eldredge Jenkins.
I want to finish it and the sequel,
"Clanless," before her book launch party this fall.

CIVIL WAR

During our study of the Civil War,
We did reading projects for Civil War books that we read.

SWEET CLARA AND THE FREEDOM QUILT
Brigham, Abby S., Josh, Callie, and Brasher
As part of their project, they made a "freedom quilt."

THE BOY WHO LOOKED LIKE ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Cache, Rebecca, and Hazel
Their project was a giant...
(I don't know what they're called, but depending on what you pick,
they count as they open it until you get to the next one.)

MARCHING TO APPOMATTOX
Meilan, Abby C., Calvin, and Andrew
made a poster about the surrender

LINCOLN'S TEN SENTENCES
 Kinlee, Max, Alicia, Cole,and Rose
Their project was a giant "stove top hat"
with the Gettysburg Address on it.
This book is an excellent grammar lesson!

ABE'S HONEST WORDS
Taylor, Mary, Audrey, and Tammy
made a life size Abe Lincoln

 CHILDREN'S CLOTHING OF THE 1800S
Adah, Hannah L., Gabe, Ethan, and Hannah S.
made a pyramid and a poster of what clothing
for children was like during the 1800s.

THE SILENT WITNESS
Lauren and Megan (Leslie was absent)
read a book about a doll who was a witness to the
Civil War.  Quilts were also made in the story, and these
girls made 3-D quilt pieces.

PINK AND SAY
 Jaylee, Kennedy, Avry, and Dallin
made a pyramid about this classic
Patricia Polocco book.
