OLIVER

We attended Timberline Middle School's musical . . .
Oliver!
It was a famous movie when Miss Mitchell was growing up.
It is kind of like "Annie", but a boy's version.
The student's did a really great job!
It was fun to see former students show off their talents!

SIX MONTHS LATER . . .

This picture was taken 6 months ago . . .
October 26
My birthday!
There has NEVER been snow on my birthday!
It's usually a nice, warm, sunshiny day.
High 50s-Low 60s.
Six months later . . .
. . . This is my "half birthday"
April 26
There is NEVER snow on April 26!
It's usually a nice, warm, sunshiny day.
Mid 60s-Low 70s.
NOT high 30s-Low 40s!
(There is STILL 690 inches at the Snowbird Ski Resort!)

. . . and this is April 30!
The tree behind my condo with blossoms and snow.

Poor blossoms

We have spent A LOT of recesses inside this spring!
This has only happened ONE other time in the 31 years Miss Mitchell
has been teaching . . .1983!

Because of the spring snow, sleet, hail, rain, thunder, lightning,
and temperatures in the 40s and 50s . . .
. . . no snow could MELT!
The week after school was out for the summer, the temperatures went from
the 50s to the 90s!

We then had this to deal with . . .

 Many roads looked like this!

There was nowhere for the rising waters to go in the Salt Lake Canyons!
They directed the water down the streets of Salt Lake to State Street!
There was even a bridge built over the street for people to cross!
It was aMaZiNg to see!
(Hope it just gradually warms up between now and June!)

ONE OF ALPINE ELEMENTARY'S FINEST! FORMER CUSTODIAN, JAY ROMRELL

JAY ROMRELL

  |   Visit Guest Book

Jay Lloy Romrell 6/24/1932 ~ 4/20/2011 Our beloved father, husband, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at home on April 20, 2011. Born in Wilford, Idaho June 24, 1932 to proud parents Rulon Ruben Romrell and Myrtle Jane Harder Romrell. His father taught him early in life to work hard and be honest in all dealings. It was a work ethic he practiced all the rest of his days. He will forever be remembered with fondness by all those children who attended David Gourley and Alpine elementary schools where he worked. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served an honorable mission in Canada, and many other church callings throughout his life. Dad was one of a kind. He was a man of integrity, strength, hard work, joy, compassion, wisdom, honesty, charity, dependability, laughter and faith. He was admired and loved by all those who knew him. He was a simple man and derived great joy and happiness through his family and service. He knew and believed the greatest treasure a man could have is an eternal family. Dad, you will surely be missed. Hugs and kisses till we meet again. Proceeded in death by Parents, daughter Trina Hancock, son Wade Verde, Brothers Dean and Burton Romrell and Sister Marie Bateman. Survived by his loving wife Elynor Peatross Verde Romrell, Sons Lloy Romrell, Scott Verde, Troy Verde, Brandon Verde, Daughters Angie Whytock, J'Nette Bonner, Lorie Felix, Coleen Hayes, 33 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and brother Paul Romrell, and sister Anna Jane Hafen. YOU CAN'T FOOL AN OLD LADY!

We had an unscheduled fire drill yesterday.  You know it's coming when the following happens:
          1.  The blower shuts off
          2.  A bright light flashes
          3.  A blaring, horrible sound starts...and doesn't end

As a teacher, I have to grab a back pack (it feels like 20 pounds) and head out. The big, beautiful, shiny, Lone Peak fire truck was parked on the playground, with three firemen standing in front of the truck as we passed.
My students know to line up in numerical order at our assigned place.  Students then say their number.  If the person in front of them is not there, they say that student's name, and" absent."  After going through the line, two of my students were not there.  In our backpack, we have two big colored cards...red and green.  We hold up green if everything is ok, and red if it's not.
As I held up my red card, and looked around...I was alone in holding up my color.  Miss Larsen came and wrote down the names of the missing kids.  The "all clear" flag was then waved.  As I passed the firemen, they complimented me on knowing that my students were missing.  I told them, "You can't fool an old lady!"
Everyone seemed pretty pleased with the way the drill turned out.  I didn't tell them my kids were waving at my from inside the fire truck...parked straight ahead of our line!
