OUR FAVORITE U.S. PRESIDENT

The votes are in on the poll question, "Who Is Your Favorite U.S. President?"

Our Favorite U.S. President is Abraham Lincoln. Upon his death, the news read, ..."Now he belongs to the ages."
Ronald Reagan was the 2nd favorite president of those voting. He was the president when Miss Mitchell began teaching. My favorite Ronald Reagan quote: "Mr. Gorbachav, tear down this wall!"
..."First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." George Washington finished 3rd in our poll.

AMERICAN FOLKLORE

We did a short unit about American Folklore characters. Each student picked a character and did a summary and picture of that character our bulletin board. We also wrote our own original folklore---a myth, legend, fable, or fairy tale. (The jars in the front are the sand bottles we're working on!)

EAGLES

We made eagles as part of our Revolutionary War unit. They were in the hall between pictures of Revolutionary War sites that Miss Mitchell has visited.

GOODBYE TO AN AMAZING MAN

On Friday, February 20, we lost a valiant member of the state of Utah. Larry H. Miller has been a fixture in this state for over 30 years. He was a "self-made" man. He started working as a stocker in a car dealership, and worked his way up. He owned all the Larry H. Miller car dealerships, Jordan Commans, Mayan, KJZZ TV, 1320 KFAN radio, the Bees baseball team, Miller Motor Racesway, the Energy Solutions Arena, and the Utah Jazz. He has provided jobs for thousands in the state, as well as entertained us. He has been the Utah Jazz owner since 1985. He also has taught business classes at BYU. You can reach for the stars and dream big with hard work and dedication like Mr. Miller!

This little Jazz note is on each of the player's jerseys. It has Mr. Miller's initials on it.

LAST WEEK FOR JAZZ READING!!!

Who wants a Jazz player to come to our school? Of course, Miss Mitchell does!!! This is your final week of Jazz Reading---50 minutes a day. Please turn in all slips on Monday, February 23.

Whenever the Jazz are on the court, they are thinking, "...hmmmmm. I wonder if the students at Alpine Elementary are getting their Jazz reading done so one of us can come down!
Our school has had Howard Eisley, Derek Fisher, and AK 47 himself---Andrei Kirilinko!!! Others want a chance to come!

Here's a picture of my great niece, Courtney, with Kyle Korver at a season ticket event. Kyle really, really, REALLY wants to come to Alpine Elementary!!!

WE HAVE A CLASS HOTTIE!

I didn't know we had a class hottie! Check out Tyler in his Valentine Day shirt!

VALENTINE'S DAY!

THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY GIVING AND RECEIVING VALENTINE'S, AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 6TH GRADE VALENTINE'S DANCE NEXT YEAR!

MRS. POPE DANCING WITH HER SON, NATHAN, AT THE 6TH GRADE VALENTINE'S DANCE.

HERE WE ARE PLAYING VALENTINE BINGO. THE CUTE HEARTS ON SOME OF THE DESKS ARE OUR VALENTINE FOLDERS.

WE PLAYED A GAME WHERE WE HAD TO TRY TO UNWRAP CHOCOLATE BARS WITH PLASTIC KNIVES, THEN IT AS MUCH AS WE COULD BEFORE THE PERSON FLIPPING 3 COINS GOT ALL HEADS OR ALL TAILS!

SCIENCE FAIR 2009

Our Science Fair was held on Thursday, February 12. We have been working hard on our projects for six weeks! We were judged on the following:
Following the Scientific Method
Appearance
Communication with the judges
Special thanks to our judges: Paul, John, Linda, Tyler, Debbie, and Cristie.

Elizabeth and Kailani were trying to find out which liquid dissolves aspirin fastest---Diet Coke, of course!

Emily and Linzey were teaching us how to make recycled paper.

Wyatt and Ryan W. found that the Energizer battery lasts the longest!

Katie and her partner wanted to know which balls bounced higher---rubber, or leather.

Ryan K. and his partner thought that children who could read could get the childproof caps off of pill bottles the best, because they could read the directions. But that didn't matter, because they wouldn't read the directions anyway!

We all knew Elly and Eli would be partners! They did an experiment on getting a whole egg into a jar.

Addie and her partner had a project titled, "Whoo's In the Food Chain?" They opened owl pellets to see what they ate! Where do you get owl pellets? Online, of course!

Tyler and his partner thought it would be fun to see if they minds were affected by lack of sleep. During a sleep over, they did tests with reading, math, and memory. After staying up 5 hours after their bedtime, they were tested again. At 7:00 a.m., they got up and did the tests again. Reading and math were not affected, but memory was! So if you can't remember things, you're probably not getting enough sleep!

LUKE WANTED TO KNOW IF AN EARTHWORM WOULD SURVIVE AFTER BEING CUT IN HALF. OF COURSE! THEY HAVE 5 HEARTS!

WHICH FRUIT PRODUCES THE HIGHEST VOLTAGE? IT'S NOT A CITRUS FRUIT LIKE YOU WOULD THINK, IT'S AN APPLE! KADEN DID A GREAT JOB ON HIS PROJECT!

GAVIN AND HIS PARTNER, GREG (WHO WAS ABSENT THE DAY OF THE SCIENCE FAIR), WANTED TO KNOW WHICH PAPER AIRPLANES FLY THE BEST.

CAITLIN AND HER PARTNER HAD A GREAT PROJECT TITLED "WHO SAYS ALL SHADOWS ARE BLACK?"

LIZ TESTED THE BOILING POINTS OF DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS.

HOW TO USE A SOLAR POWERED BUILDING WAS THE PROJECT OF BEN AND HIS PARTNER.

SARAH HAD A FUN PROJECT ON WHICH ANIMAL WAS EASIEST TO TAKE CARE OF---CATS OR DOGS.

BRANDON AND BROOK DID THEIR PROJECT ON THE GAUSSIAN GUN.

KELI WANTED TO KNOW WHAT BIRDS LIKE TO EAT. EACH BIRD LIKED DIFFERENT ITEMS, BUT NONE OF THEM LIKED A MIXTURE.
