CHANGE IS A GOOD THING

This past General Conference,
they combined the High Priests with the Elders.

RIP TO ONE OF THE GREATEST FIRST LADIES

On Tuesday, April 17,
Former First Lady, Barbara Bush, passed away.
She served as First Lady while her husband,
George H.W. Bush, was president.
1989-1993.
He was also President Reagan's
vice-president for the previous 8 years.
She worked hard to improve literacy in the U.S.

Mrs. Bush is only one of two women
to be both married to a president,
and mother to a president.
Son, George W. Bush served from 2001-2009.

She was also so down to earth!
Always wearing pearl earrings and necklace,
telling everyone,
"Yes, I'm a size 16, and I don't color my hair!"

First Ladies:
Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton,
Betty Ford, and Nancy Reagan.

With her son, President George W. Bush
after 9-11.

More First Ladies were alive in my
lifetime than Presidents.
Some were First Ladies before I was born,
but were still alive while I was growing up.

Below are the First Ladies in my lifetime,
who their husband was, years in the White House,
years born, died, and age at death or current age.
Their names are the names they were known by.
The photos were taken while they were First Lady.

Eleanor Roosevelt
First Lady to President Franklin D. Roosevelt
 1933-1945
1884-1962  Died at age 78

Bess Truman
First Lady to President Harry S Truman
1945-1953
1885-1982  Died at age 97

Mamie Eisenhower
First Lady to President Dwight D. Eisenhower
1953-1961
1896-1979 Died at age 82

Jackie Kennedy
First Lady to John F. Kennedy
1961-1963
1929-1994  Died at age 64

Lady Bird Johnson
First Lady to Lyndon B. Johnson
1963-1969
1912-2007  Died at age 91

Pat Nixon
First Lady to Richard M. Nixon
1969-1974
1912-1993  Died at age 81

Betty Ford
First Lady to President Gerald R. Ford
1974-1977
1918-2011  Died at age 93

Rosalyn Carter
First Lady to President Jimmy Carter
1977-1981
1927  Currently age 91

Nancy Reagan
First Lady to President Ronald Reagan
1981-1989
1921-2016  Died at age 94

Barbara Bush
First Lady to President George H. W. Bush
1989-1993
1925-2018  Died at age 92

Hillary Clinton
First Lady to President Bill Clinton
1993-2001
1947  Currently age 70

Laura Bush
First Lady to George W. Bush
2001-2009
1946  Currently age 71

Michelle Obama
First Lady to Barrack Obama
2009-2017
1964  Currently age 54

Melania Trump
First Lady to Donald J. Trump
2017-
1970  Currently age 47

Three of the First Ladies were born in
the 1800's (Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman,
and Mamie Eisenhower).  I knew many people
born in the 1800's, including two great grandparents
that both passed away when I was a Junior.

It's also interesting that the six First Ladies
following Jackie Kennedy were older than
she was (Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford,
Rosalyn Carter, Nancy Reagan, and Barbara Bush)!
After those ladies, there were two born in the 40's
(Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush),
one in the 60's (Michelle Obama), and one in the 70's
(Melania Trump).

April 17, 2018.
We had snow . . . and lots of it!!!

I have absolutely no problem sitting on the
couch, and watching the giant
snowflakes come down!
Huzzah for retirement!!!

One hour after these condo pics were
taken, the snow was gone.

Good thing our lawn was mowed on Monday!

MONTHLY ACCOLADES

Once again, my boy, Donovan has won
Rookie of the Month!
This time, March & April were combined.
Sooo, he has won this award
every month, except the first month.
That one was won by Laker, Kyle Kuzma,
who played at the U.

WAHOOOOO!!!
This man is soooo deserving of this award!
We lost the top player last year.
Injuries...Rudy twice.
And, he still gets them to perform!
Great job, Coach Q!!!

SEALING

On Thursday, April 5, on Heidi & Kordell's
1st anniversary, they were sealed in the
Mount Timpanogos Temple.
Heidi and I taught together for 33 years.
We retired at the same time (although mine
was a secret).  She taught 2 years before I came
to Alpine.  So, she had a total of 35 years.

Heidi and first husband, Steve, divorced in the
late 80's.  She raised her 2 boys as a single mom
for years and years.
Kordell treats her like gold!

I was happy to attend this special occasion!

50 YEARS

April 4, 1968.
I was at the end of my 4th grade year.
Dr. (and Reverend) Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated by
James Earl Ray, at a motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was a Civil Rights activist, especially for
African Americans.

He was also famous for his
"I Have A Dream" speech in Washington D.C.
I have a very vivid memory of this event.
He was on the network news all the time.
(Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley were the
news anchors . . . no one ever matched them!)

Today.
April 4, 218.
Fifty years!
Getting old.
*Sigh*

Thank you for your service.

SECRETARY OF THE CENTURY

KENNETH & SANDRA WALKER

SANDRA WALKER WAS MY SECRETARY AT
ALPINE ELEMENTARY FOR 21 YEARS.
SHE IS TH FIRST PERSON I MET AT WHEN I WENT
TO THE SCHOOL.
SHE WAS SOOOO SWEET AND KIND.
ALWAYS HELPFUL AND WOULD LISTEN.

WHEN SHE RETIRED, AFTER 30 YEARS WE HAD A DINNER AT
MELLOR BANQUET & CATERING.
CARL MELLOR WAS HER FIRST PRINCIPAL.
EVERY FACULTY MEMBER WAS THERE, EXCEPT
ANALEE, WHO HAD A MANDATORY
TAB CHOIR REHEARSAL.
MANY TEACHERS FROM THE PAST CAME.

EACH PRINCIPAL SPOKE, AND THEY ALL SAID
THE SAME THING.
WHEN AN IRATE PARENT CAME TO THE SCHOOL,
SHE GOT THEM ALL SETTLED DOWN BEFORE
THEY WENT IN TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE!
UNBELIEVABLE!

SHE HAS SINCE MOVED TO ST. GEORGE.
I MISS HER.
SHE WAS NOT ONLY LOVED, BUT BELOVED.

MICHELLE

Michelle Holbrook taught 2nd grade
at Alpine Elementary in the early '90s.
She is great!
This article appeared in the Utah Valley Magazine.
It was about "Fab 40" . . . 40 people in Utah County
who make a difference.

She currently teaches Resource at
Lehi High School.
