OUR TWO NEW FAVORITE WORDS

We have two new favorite words that everyone likes to say:  Jimmer Fredette!  (Fre-dette, not Fred-ette)
Jimmer plays basketball at BYU.

You know you're really good when you're on a poster . . .

. . . the cover of Sports Illustrated (where the President of the United States even talks about you!). . .

. . . appear on websites . . .

Or, everyone is buying a shirt with your name on!

The ultimate is when you have a song named after you, and the entire country is singing it and they have "Jimmermania!"  "Teach Me How To Jimmer!"

GOOD LUCK, JIMMER!

WHERE DID MY SCHOOL GO?

My mom and I went to St. George the first weekend of March.  We were driving around, looking for West Elementary.  My mom taught there, and I went to kindergarten there.  All we saw was this:

Where did my school go?

In looking on the internet...it was torn down.

This is the view of the Black Mountain that I had from the playground.

No one could miss these trees!  Thank goodness they are still there!

My mom's classroom on the left, looked out on one of these gorgeous trees!

This was the back of the school where we lined up.  Each classroom in the back had it's own door.  Every Friday, we walked across a little bridge, with a nickel, to get an ice cream cone!

This is how the playground looked when I was there!

And, this is what the playground looks like today:

They say change is good...you must make progress...but, you can't take away my memories!

MEET A REAL HERO . . . JAKE GARN!

On Thursday, March 3, Miss Mitchell was able to meet a real hero!  Jake Garn.  Senator Garn grew up in Richfield, Utah.  He was 19 when he first went outside of Utah...driving over the border to Idaho!
Senator Garn was an insurance agent, Navy pilot, Brigadier General, Salt Lake County Commissioner, Salt Lake Mayor, US Senator, and Astronaut!

An interesting fact:  Senator Garn served in the US Senate from 1974-1993.  He replace Senator Wallace F. Bennett.  When Senator Garn retired from the Senate, his replacement was Senator Bob Bennett...the son of Senator Wallace Bennett!

Senator Garn was the first civilian to fly on the space shuttle...making him a real live astronaut!  He was the Payload Specialist on the mission.  He was to be on the Challenger flight, but was changed to fly on Discovery.  He trained with the Challenger astronauts...who were killed on their launch into space.  One of the fun experiments he was able to conduct on board, was to see how toys react in weightlessness!
Senator Garn logged 2.5 million miles in space...with 108 orbits of the earth.  He saw 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day of the flight.  He said Earth was breathtaking!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!
