This is the Alofipo family.

The mother is Tara.

Her mother, Karen, was my college roommate.

They live in St. George.

Her sealing to Wayne was very spiritual, and I

was thrilled to attend!

And 9 months later . . . BAM!  Twins!!!

Makaki and Maddux.

Maddux (blonde in hair) had an appendectomy in June.

He was healing, and then got worse!

He had to be life-flighted to Primary Children's Hospital

in Salt Lake City.

He ended up there twice, and also back at Dixie Medical.

Wayne is an assistant football coach at

Dixie High School.

Their family LOVES BYU football!

Because of all the medical expenses,

they had a fund raiser in St. George.

Since I couldn't be there, I sent $100 to

the family to help with (I'm sure) expenses.

I was going to send a BYU shirt to Maddux,

then decided to send one to Malaki, too.

They are both in 5th grade!

Then Titan had to have stitches

his first day of kindergarten.

So, I decided to send shirts to the

entire family!

GARETT

Garett Vance was one of my all time favorites!

I say that about all of them,

but Garett really was!

I have known Garett since he was born!

His grandpa, Calvan Vance, taught

next door to me for 17 years!

He was my all time favorite teammate!!!

His grandfather, Thayne Bateman, was the

custodian my first 3 years of teaching!

He and his siblings went with me to

a Jazz game when a season ticket holder

used to get 2 extra seats at a game.

Garett worked as a sweeper at Alpine

when he was in high school.

When I retired, the entire Vance family

had a 4th of July bbq for my retirement!

Garett served a mission in Tucson, Arizona.

When he returned, Nichole Hyde and her family

attended the homecoming and brunch.

They were in the same ward in Alpine.

Nichole's mom, Brook, was a music teacher

at Alpine Elementary.

Then, they moved to Salt Lake City.

After the homecoming, they got together.

The reception was at Calvan (RIP) and Margaret's home.

It was sooo great to see everybody!!!

RISE & SHOUT! THE CAFFEINE IS OUT!!!

It’s official. Brigham Young University students can now get their caffeine fix on campus.

BYU Dining Services has already begun adding caffeinated sodas to their inventory, and students should be able to purchase canned or bottled sodas while the university switches their soda fountains to add caffeinated soft drinks, according to an online statement from Dean Wright, director of Dining Services.

The university will be adding Coca-Cola Freestyle dispensers at some locations on campus.

BYU also said caffeinated drinks will now be available at athletic events on campus.

In a question and answer piece published online, Wright said the director of BYU Dining Services in the 1950s made the decision not to sell caffeinated soft drinks.

Wright said the decision to offer caffeinated sodas stemmed from student interest, which has grown in the last few years.

In 2012, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement clarifying its stance on how caffeinated sodas fit in with the Word of Wisdom and said it “does not mention the use of caffeine.”

Since then, students have been expressing interest in getting access to caffeinated beverages on campus.

“Over the last several years, we have seen an increase in our customers, our consumer, in requests for caffeinated soft drinks,” said Carri Jenkins, spokeswoman for BYU. “We have been looking at this over the last several years as we’ve seen the increase.”

In the statement, Wright said BYU will continue to honor their contract with Coca-Cola, they will not sell energy drinks and students will continue to have access to the caffeine-free beverages BYU already had.

There are not current plans to offer Dr. Pepper brand drinks campus wide, though they are available at the Twilight Zone and at the Creamery on Ninth.

Jenkins said the announcement does not mean BYU lifted what has been called a ban on caffeinated drinks.

“Caffeinated soft drinks have never been banned from our campus,” Jenkins said. “Campus dining services has just not offered them.”

Word of the news spread quickly Thursday morning as BYU students and alumni took to social media. Jenkins said the level of excitement regarding the addition of caffeinated drinks has taken the university by surprise.

She would not speculate on if energy drinks will be offered in the future and encouraged students to check nutritional information in the dining services website to make wise food decisions.

BYU students rushed to buy caffeinated Coca-Cola products Thursday morning to have their own slice of history.

Whitney Erikson, a senior at BYU, had bought a Coca-Cola in the Wilkinson Student Center after seeing the news Thursday on Instagram. She had taken a screenshot of the news and sent it out to friends with the caption “best news ever.” Previously, she’d gone to nearby gas stations to buy caffeinated soft drinks and had stocked up on cases at Smith’s.

Erikson also called her mom to share the news.

“She said, ‘it’s the Lord’s school, finally,’” Erikson said.

Gas stations were popular spots to pick up caffeinated soft drinks before Thursday’s announcement, as were students who would buy caffeinated drinks elsewhere and then resell them to students on campus. Rosa Mendez, a sophomore who carried an unopened bottle of Coca-Cola through the student center Thursday afternoon, knew of a student who would sell caffeinated drinks in the student center.

She was supportive of the university’s decision and said drinking caffeinated soft drinks is a personal choice.

“It’s nice to have something to give you energy throughout the day,” Mendez said.

I used to bring my own Diet Coke to

the football games.

And then, 9-11 happened.

THE BIG 3-4

Ashley hit the big 3-4 on September 18!

She was born at the beginning of my 4th year

of teaching.

Ashley has had quite the last 3 years!

She lost 80 pounds, and reached her goal

weight at Weight Watchers.

She then got pregnant with Ryker.

When he was 8 months old, Ashley, Jon,

and their 3 older kids went on their dream vacation

to Disneyland and Southern California!

Ryker stayed with Grandma Laurel.

Two months later, Ashley had an aneurysm.
About 1 1/2 months later, she had brain surgery!
Because Ryker stayed with Grandma Laurel when they
went to California, he was able to go with her.
Since then, Ashley got back down to her goal weight, plus 20 more!
She has lost a little over 100 pounds!!!

ON, WISCONSIN

When I was in 7th grade, our band played a

fun song called, "On Wisconsin!"

It was the University of Wisconsin's

fight song.

Wisconsin is one of the better college

football teams.
In fact, when I went to the Rose Parade with
the American Fork High School band, Wisconsin
was playing Oregon in the Rose Parade!
(Oregon beat them in the final seconds)

Here is the Wisconsin band and float
in the 2012 Rose Parade.

When the University of Utah went to the PAC-12,
I think BYU panicked!
BYU could not go to the PAC-12.
Although college football is played on Saturday,
all of the other sports are played on Sunday.
So, BYU bolted from the Mountain West Conference,
and became "Independent" (like Notre Dame)
in football.  They joined the West Coast Conference
in all other sports.  They are religious schools
(most notably John Stockton's school, Gonzaga)
who also do not play on Sunday.

When you are Independent, you have to find
schools to play.
We've played some great teams . . . Notre Dame, UCLA,
Washington, Nebraska, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Our season starts out hard, while others play
schools that are below mediocrity.

This year, we beat Portland State, and then we had 3 games
on the schedule that I thought we would lose:
LSU, Utah, Wisconsin.
The LSU game was supposed to be in Houston,
but because of Hurricane Harvey, it was moved
to the Super Dome . . . 2 hours from the LSU campus.
One player on the LSU team is the son of
Jazz legend, Karl Malone!
Karl Malone, Jr.  (KJ)

The broadcasters of 1280 the Zone were excited
because Karl was staying at the hotel the teams were.
The BYU players had to be told he was one of
the statues outside the Vivint Arena!

When Bronco Mendenhall left BYU, Kalani Sitakie
became the new head coach.
(A head coach at any BYU sport must have a
current temple recommend.)
Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer, is
QB coach and offensive coordinator.
I'm not sure if it's because all of the coaches are new
(now second year) or the players aren't that good.
But, I think it's because the other teams are better.

On Saturday, September 16, Wisconsin came to town.
(USU was tied with Wisconsin earlier this month,
10-10 at halftime and lost 59-10)
The game was on  ABC, so a 1:30 start.

We had our ADK chapter planning meeting...breakfast at
Village Inn, then planning at Murray library.
Mark brought Shay to the restaurant, then
we left right after.
Shay is in 5th grade this year at Riley Elementary
in Salt Lake City!  She is soooo smart,
because she loves 5th grade!!!

(I missed the first game cuz of being the Utah ADK president,
and we had a board meeting that had been scheduled for a year!)

 I love taking Shay!
She's always so appreciative!
It was fun, all except that final score!

She was the Days of '47 Queen when she graduated!
I got to know her because her sister, Cindy, lived

I babysat Cindy's two oldest kids...Tiffany and Tyler.
Cheer is 2 years younger than me.  Her brother, Brian,
is my age.
Cindy's granddaughter is Witney Carson from
Dancing With the Stars!
So, I babysat Witney Carson's dad!!!

Love him!  This kid could fix anything!
He actually once fixed my broken cupboard!

The highlight of the game was the retiring of #6.
